Prepare for anything but the norm at the third event in MCASD’s new eXit pARTy series. With hands-on activities, performance art, cocktails, and more, eXit pARTies offer MCASD Members new ways to engage with contemporary art.
Celebrate the exhibition Memories of Underdevelopment and enjoy live music by two artists who are experts in Tropicalia music.
Thalma De Freitas hails from Brazil and delivers smooth silky mezzo-soprano and charismatic performances. Living in Los Angeles since 2012, Thalma has been invited to perform her charismatic Samba Jazz in venues like Blue Whale, Grand Performances, ArtPower at UCSD, Skirball Center, and Union Station.
Brian Cross, aka B+, is co-founder of Mochilla Records and a professor at UC San Diego who has taught courses on Tropicalia and Cinema Novo. B+ was born and raised in Limerick, Ireland but came to Los Angeles in 1990 to study photography at the California Institute of the Arts. He works frequently in the L.A. hiphop community, directing music videos and creating hundreds of album covers for well-known artists such as Mos Def, Eazy E, Long Beach Dub All-Stars, Ozomatli, Jurrassic 5, Blackalicious, Warren G, Damian Marley, and many more.
Both acts have extensive knowledge of the music and rare vinyls from the region.
