My Name Is
On April 24th from 6-11pm, A SHIP IN THE WOODS presents:
“My name is _____. I am from ______.”
Exploring ideas about location as it relates to identity, this event will feature art, music, and interactive works from 24 contemporary artists with roots all along the West Coast from Tijuana to San Francisco. Visitors will have the opportunity to spend time in a wax-coated geodesic dome, listen to a musical performance that incorporates smell and sound, use 3ft long chopsticks, get entangled in a discussion about our origins, and hear a series of anthems about the beach towns in San Diego and North County. The evening will also feature new installations, videos, sculptures and performances, all investigating notions of “home”, city, and country and examining what it means to say, “I am from” and engaging with the following questions: Why are we attached to some places we have lived, but not others? How does our “place” define us? How do we determine the place that becomes where we are from? What is the illusion of physical space and borders and how are we emotionally attached to them? These artists will explore how identity and place are inadvertently bound together.
“The desire to go home, that is the desire to be whole, to know where you are, to be the point of intersection of all the lines drawn through the stars” -Rebecca Solnit (author of Storming the Gates of Paradise: Landscapes for Politics)
